Projects to be approved for funding by the Shetland LEADER programme to date are as follows.
Approvals on 15th December 2011:
Cunningsburgh and District Agricultural Society to undertake groundworks to increase the useable area of the Showfield for equestrian use in particular and to construct 2 new multipurpose sheds for storage of equipment, to provide a bigger and better display area for exhibits on show day and for the use of other community groups at other times of the year. Approval of £49,500, 42.66% of total project costs.
Voluntary Action Shetland to set up Parent Link Shetland through the employment of a project co-ordinator and by training facilitators and Parent Link volunteers to provide a support service and parenting courses for parents of young people of all ages throughout Shetland. Approval of £48,141.05, 46.6% of total project costs.
Approvals on 25th August 2011:
Hillswick Hall to upgrade the Hillswick Hall both to meet current regulations regarding disabled access, including toilets, and kitchen facilities and also to provide a more comfortable, modern and user-friendly facility for the local community. Approval of £245,519, 65.6% of total project costs.
Shetland Rugby Club to employ a full time Rugby Development Officer to work with Shetland Islands Council Active Schools Programme, the NHS Healthy Living Programme and Scottish Rugby Union, to increase participation in rugby by all age groups. Approval of £31,000, 49.21% of total project costs.
Shetland Islands Council "You Choose – Youth Participatory Budgeting": for a project to empower young people aged between 12 and 25 to identify their needs, debate and prioritise new projects, bid for funding and allocate a budget in a democratic and transparent way. Approval of £4,100, 50% of total project costs.
Shetland Islands Council for a 2-year pilot project, to purchase and manage external funding search-engine software. This will include two separate but complementary funding database products, one of which will be hosted on the Shetland Islands Council website and the other an internal system which will be located in a number of key locations and departments throughout Shetland. Both will be free to use and available to organisations from the private, public, voluntary, community and learning sectors. Approval of £4,375, 50% of total project costs.
Approvals on 5th May 2011:
Shetland Amenity Trust to develop a map-based application for iphone and/or other Smartphones linked with phone GPS systems which will introduce users to ‘Geopark Shetland’, and allow users to access text and audio, visual and graphic content based around Shetland’s key geosites. This project is part of a wider transnational project with partners from another Geopark in North Pennines UK and aspiring Geoparks in Hondsrug, Netherlands and Chablais, France, each one developing their own Heritage Interpretation using New Technologies. Approval of £63,000, 70% of total project costs.
Approvals on 10th March 2011:
Shetland Moving Image Archive Group for phase 1 of establishing a local moving image archive. Approval of £27,555, 45% of total project costs.
Belmont Trust to furnish and equip Belmont House in Unst as high quality self-catering accommodation, a tourist attraction and a venue for local events and to set up a website to promote the venue and take on line bookings. Approval of £16,674, 45% of total project costs.
Shetland Islands Council for a pilot project to establish “Next Generation” broadband of up to 25MB connection speed by building a “backhaul” network between Fetlar and Lerwick to increase the bandwidth and availability of wireless broadband in Fetlar. Approval of £50,000, 50% of total project costs.
Shetland Islands Council for a grant scheme to provide financial support to groups and organisations staging new or additional events and festivals in Shetland. Approval of £30,000, 50% of total project costs.
Shetland Islands Council (in partnership with Community Energy Scotland) for a grant scheme to assist community groups to improve the energy efficiency of their premises and thereby reduce costs. Approval of £200,000, 50% of total project costs.
Burravoe and District Development Group to construct a building to be used as a community and cultural centre for the local community of Burravoe in Yell. Approval of £158,944, 47.5% of total project costs.
Shetland College for a project to provide “Rural Access to Innovative Skills for Employability” across rural areas of Shetland and the Staneyhill area of Lerwick. Approval of £149,336, 50% of total project costs.
Shetland Islands Council for a project to modernise access to a range of services in Shetland by developing a single plastic card that can be used for services such as library, leisure facilities, school meals, buses and inter island ferries. Approval of £77,500, 50% of total project costs.
Moving On Employment Project Ltd to develop a Transition Support Service for young people across Shetland with additional support needs or autistic spectrum conditions, helping them move from full time education or from benefits into training and employment. Approval of £57,431, 47.5% of total project costs.
Approvals on 13th January 2011:
Shetland Islands Credit Union to establish a Credit Union in Shetland. Approval of £21,000, 35% of total project costs.
North Unst Public Hall to develop and upgrade the North Unst Public Hall. Approval of £100,000, 47% of total project costs.
Approvals on 18th November 2010:
Northmavine Club to build publicly accessible toilets, shower and laundry facilities at the Collafirth Pier. Approval of £29,600, 42% of total project costs.
Approvals on 29th July 2010:
Shetland Bus Friendship Society to employ a Scalloway Museum Development Co-ordinator for 3 years. Approval of £50,000, 50% of total project costs. This replaces a previous project approved on 2nd July 2009 which has been withdrawn.
Approvals on 3rd June 2010:
Shetland Islands Council for a pilot Participatory Budgeting project in the North Staney Hill area of Lerwick. Participatory Budgeting is a new approach to involving communities in decision making and problem solving within their own communities. Approval of £20,000, 50% of total project costs.
Shetland Community Bike Project for a part time project development worker over 2 years to develop the organisation’s new premises as a “One Stop Shop” for carbon reduction information projects in Shetland. Approval of £16,978, 47.5% of total project costs.
Approvals on 8th April 2010:
Shetland Cattle from Shetland Breeders Group for staging a centenary event in summer 2010 to celebrate the continuing survival of the breed. Approval of £20,402, 40% of total project costs.
Shetland Islands Council for a Creative Industries Student Support Scheme to encourage and enable students learning creative skills at Shetland College to acquire business skills during their studies and to support prospective entrepreneurs with their first steps into business. Approval of £60,000, 50% of total project costs.
Approvals on 11th February 2010:
Shetland Amenity Trust for developing geology trails for Unst and Fetlar. Approval of £5,740, 35% of total project costs.
Approvals on 29nd October 2009:
Shetland Islands Council for a 2 year pilot grant scheme to develop and enhance high quality local heritage related visitor products, activities and services. Approval of £45,861, 35% of total project costs.
Approvals on 3rd September 2009:
Whalsay History Group to undertake a feasibility study/options appraisal for the complex of buildings at Midden Court, Hillhead, Whalsay. Approval of £8,789, 50% of total project costs.
Shetland Islands Council to develop and manage new resources to promote dialect development among young people, particularly upper primary and secondary school ages. Approval of £66,980, 50% of total project costs.
Seafood Shetland to conduct a MSC pre-assessment study to determine the position of Shetland’s rope grown mussel industry to proceed to full MSC accreditation. Approval of £3,200, 40% of total project costs.

Cunningsburgh History Group to establish history group premises adjacent to the Cunningsburgh public hall. Approval of £28,168.50, 50% of total project costs.

Soil Association Scotland to deliver the Crofting Connections programme to reconnect young people with their land, culture and history and inspire them to live and work in their crofting communities. Approval of £7,013.00, 45% of total project costs.

NAFC Marine Centre towards the ENergy from Waste - Realising Aquacultures Potential (ENWRAP) project to design a pilot scale anaerobic digestion facility that utilises waste materials from aquaculture and fisheries. Approval of £61,220, 50% of the total project costs.
Approvals on 19th March 2009:
Shetland Arts Development Agency towards the Mirrie Dancers project aimed at engaging communities across Shetland to participate in creating artworks that use light. Approval of £30,000, 8% of the total project costs.
NAFC Marine Centre to carry out a research project on the effects of lobster storage and diet on quality. Approval of £9,575, 40% of the total project costs.
Unst Partnership for a Feasibility Study for a community buyout of the Saxa Vord Resort in Unst. Approval of £14,514, 47% of the total project costs.
Shetland Folk Festival for a Trans-Nordic educational project called Nordic Tone. Approval of £11,088, 50% of the total project costs.

Tingwall Agricultural Museum Steering Group for a feasibility study relating to a museum and heritage centre in Tingwall. Approval of £3,536, 41% of the total project costs.
Shetland Shellfish Management Organisation for Phase 1 of a project to achie MSC accreditation for the Shetland shellfish inshore fishery. Approval of £3,031.50, 40% of the total project costs.

Bixter Hall for the installation of a 6Kw aerogenerator to provide community benefit. Approval of £17,598, 40% of the total project cost.
Bridge End Outdoor Centre for the installation of a 6Kw aerogenator to provide community benefit. Approval of £12,562, 30% of the total project cost.
RNLI for the installation of a 15Kw aerogenator for the Aith Lifeboat Station. Approval of £29,670, 40% of the total project cost.
Westsandwick Hall for the installation of a 6Kw aerogenator to provide community benefit. Approval of £17,925, 40% of the total project cost.
Hillswick Hall for the installation of a 6Kw aerogenator to provide community benefit. Approval of £18,543, 40% of the total project cost.
Shetland Composites Ltd. for a pilot project to design, build and test a heating system for households, powered by renewable energy. Approval of £10,086, 41% of the total project costs.

Veer North for the provision of experimental ArtLabs throughout rural Shetland. Approval of £9,869.72, 34% of the total project cost.
Global Yell Ltd. for the establishment of a Centre for Creative Industries. Approval of £41,788, 40% of the total project cost.
Hame Fae Hame Ltd. toward the start up of a business offering high quality care for children aged between 1 and 5 years old. Approval of £5227.50, 41% of the total project cost.

Shetland Organics Producers Group for formation of community interest company. Approval of £9,960, 40% of total project costs.
Approvals on 3rd July 2008:
Skeld Waterfront Trust for the provision of an amenity building adjacent to the marina and camp/caravan site in Skeld. Approval of £13,048, 18% of the total project cost.
Shetland Animal Health Scheme for the Caseous Lymphadenitis Initiative - Shetland Breeders Scheme. Approval of £5,470, 39% of the total project cost.
